My Own Attempt At A Thriller Shot

What was this shot trying to achieve?

This shot was trying to achieve the sense of a vulnerable victim that was unaware of anyone being behind her.

How does the shot represent 'thriller'?

The shot represents thriller in the following ways:

  • The victim appears to be trapped because of the angle at which the image was taken. The exit to the room has been taken out of the shot so it appears that the only exit is from where the villain is watching her.
  • Th lighting in the room is dark and has a yellowed appearance, which creates a sci-fi appearance and makes the room look threatening. As there is no obvious natural light it also shows that the room is underground.
  • The tall walls create a claustrophobic environment in which the victim is trapped.
  • The stalker's face is also partially hidden which makes him look intimidating.

The shot itself is a two shot that has been taken at an angle. It has been taken at a high angle from the point of view of the victim and at eye level from the point of view of the stalker.

What works and what doesn't work in the shot?

The following works well:

  • The composition of the shot
  • The background figure doesn't attract attention straight away
  • The lighting and colours

The following doesn't work well so I would change them:

  • The victim's face can't be seen, so I would change the angle to show the look on her face
  • The victim's hands can't be seen which makes her purpose of being where she is unclear, so I would reveal more of her hands to show the toolbox she is meant to be looking in
  • The bottom right hand corner is too dark and the victim cannot be seen as easily as I would have liked, so I would add another artificial light source to light up the corner.
